I found this abandoned farmhouse on a farm along the rural route. It's common to find empty farmhouses in the middle of miles of crops. Small farms are bought up and used for their fields only. You can't help but wonder who once lived here and what happen to their farm.

Bring out the cool tones in your image:

Add the Antique Cool texture and set the blending mode to overlay
Lower the opacity of the texture to 65%
Slide on the Innocence Cool texture and blend on soft-light
Slip the opacity down to 85%

When I see this photo of my sister in strawberry polka dot rain boots the song Strawberry Wine comes to mind. When we were teenagers in high school when we listened and sang to Deana Carter's CD just about every Sat afternoon as we got ready for our dates.

     On the banks of the river, on a well beaten path
     It's funny how those memories they last
     Like strawberry wine and seventeen

I wasn't 17 yet, but she was! It's little things from your youth you never forget.

Congrats to last week's Texture Twist Winner - Nancy author of A Rural Journal! Nancy also has something beautiful to share. She lives on a farm in Nebraska. I was out on a photography shoot and drove past this withered barn. Of course I had stop and photography it's skeleton roof and winding vines. I soon discovered it to be a hawk's roost!

To give the sky more depth I added the antique cool texture, blended on darker color at 35% opacity.

Photography Must Haves

I thinks it's the little details and texture that make ivy & twine a must have for photography stills. For this still life I went to a recycled books store and bought two paperbacks for a $1. I tore the covers off of course! I cranked a piece of cardboard through my paper embosser and wrapped it around the books. Next, I added twine and a vintage Dollie. Last I tucked in a few sprigs of ivy tied with a little twine bow.

I photographed this farm while out shooting maternity portraits. To be honest I was actually treading back and forth in the grass to get cow manure off my boots. I got some great shots of couple, cow manure and all! By the way if your addicted to photo textures too check the Texture Giveaway at The Shabby Photographer!

Stamp on a layer of the hurricane warm texture blend on multiply at 60%
Add the dreamsicle texture blended on color, lower the opacity for just the right amount of warm

Vintage postcards are very popular in photography stills. Finding vintage postcards is easy type postcard in the search bar at Etsy and you'll find nearly 50,000 items. The difficult part is photographing them. They're flat and hold little texture or color. I find stacking them together and binding with string or ribbons works well. What do you suggest for photographing postcards?

Weekend Texture Twist

Congrats to last week's Texture Twist Winner - Amarie author of Tickle my Whimsy

I'm so excited to share with a Texture Twist by the Shabby Photographer!

In Natalie's own words "this is how the magic happened..."

I duplicated my image, changed it to screen, and set the opacity to 50% ( I like doing this as it will give your picture that over exposed kind of look that i love)
I added Life-n-Reflection's texture Morning Mist at 60% on overlay
I used a soft brush on 25% opacity and painted black to brush some of the texture off the blueberry`s that were more in the focus
Once I finished I applied a unsharpen mask to Amount 50% Radius 2.0 and Threshold 5 just enough to bring back the fine detail of the blueberries

Dried leaves add a sense of life, texture, and color to any still life. I recommend clipping any low stems from branches before drying. This creates a sturdy base for hang drying and a handle for arranging. If you'd like to dry delicate leaves use a flower press or tuck leaves between wax paper in a coffee table book.

Choose a spot in your home that receives an abundance of natural light
Create a blank canvas for your subjects- I used a white linen table cloth and large white canvas
Turn off your flash to avoid harsh shadows and dull subjects
Start with your main subject and add to until you get something you really like

I just love a bouquet freshly picked from the garden! Of course roses are nice too, but I'd take garden bouquet over a dozen red roses. It just has more character for me. And these are easier to dry! I wrapped them in simple craft paper and a piece of sheet music. Then I tied it all together with a ribbon knot.

Layer the Breathe Cool Texture blended on soft light at 75% opacity
Duplicate the texture layer and blend this new layer on darker color at 100% opacity

New Direction

Do you ever find yourself going in new direction - you would have never chosen? I certainly was today. Flying back home there where storms and tornado watches, so my flight was diverted to Little Rock Arkansas.

My amazing husband waited in the storm battered airport for 4.5 hours

and until my plane could land. If that's not love, I don't know what is!

Add storm battered touch up to your image:

Apply a curves adjustment to overexpose your image
Add the Enchanted Texture on a blending mode of darker color
Lower the opacity a few degrees to reveal more of your original image

A Nostalgic Country Touch

Start by adding the Barn Siding Texture on a blending mode of overlay at half opacity for a country touch
Duplicate the Layer [Ctrl J] and change the new layers blending mode to darker color
Slip the opacity of the 2nd layer to between 50% and 60%
For a layer of nostalgia add the French Article Texture
Set the blending mode to darker color too and lower the opacity to around 70%
Create a layer mask for each texture, select a round brush on a normal blending mode, and brush away texture from area you want to keep sharp

White tulips, a glass vase, and a white background provided a nearly blank palette for adding textures. I used a poster board covered in
white canvas fabric for my backdrop!

Try this mix of textures on your blank palette or portraits with a white background:

Begin with the Aged Paper Texture, set the blending mode to linear burn at half opacity
Duplicate the Aged Paper layer [Ctrl J], blend this new layer on multiply between 20 and 30 percent opacity
Add Parisian Script with the Fading Script Texture, blend on soft light at full opacity
Apply a layer mask to the Fading Script and brush script from subject
