Green Up Your Laundry with Wool Dryer Balls

I’m sharing three epic reasons why I ditched dryer sheets for good and why you should switch too and use wool dryer balls!

As a mother, I work hard to make better choices. It doesn’t stop with healthy snacks and limited screen time. I take the responsibility much further. Too far at times like the trials of creating a homemade liquid laundry soap.

Luckily, some choices are much easier. Wool Dryer Balls, for example, have gained significant popularity. Why?

My guess is that consumers are annoyed and irritated by chemicals in every facet of their lives. In our food, makeup, and children’s toys! We, as consumers, are looking for natural solutions that not only keep us healthier but are good for the environment.

And conventional dryer sheets, you guessed it – contain artificial fragrances and other toxic ingredients known to cause irritation and respiratory health problems.

That’s what spurred me to make a change years ago. I’m sharing three Epic reasons why you should, too, while answering common questions and tips for use.

How Do Wool Dryer Balls Work?

Felted wool dryer balls bounce around inside the clothes dryer, allowing hot air to circulate and reduce drying time. Not only that, but they naturally soften clothes, reduce wrinkles, and cut down on static.

Make sure you’re buying real 100% New Zealand wool dryer balls with no synthetic fillers, rolled into tight balls and felted for a natural, long-lasting product.

I saved over 2,000 minutes of drying time in one year by switching to wool dryer balls. That is after slashing drying time by 10 minutes per load. I typically wash just 4 to 5 loads of laundry a week. An incredible difference, if you ask me!

3 Epic Reasons to Use Wool Dryer Balls

It’s time to ditch the dryer sheets and use wool dryer balls instead – here’s why:

Shorten drying time up to 25% using wool dryer balls to save energy & money.

Sustainably replace disposable dryer sheets with wool dryer balls that last up to 1000 loads.

Soften laundry without toxins – wool is biodegradable, naturally antimicrobial, and free of chemicals or dyes.

You can gain all that with just one easy switch!

I share more about why and how to use wool dryer balls in this video!

Does the wool create fuzz on your clothes? I wondered the same the first time I used them. They do not add any fuzz or extra lint to your clothes. I see a regular amount of lint in the dryer lint trap and use my easy lint brush to remove it.

Do they make your clothes wrinkle free? They do a great job of preventing wrinkles! I rarely have to use my fabric steamer.

How To Use Wool Dryer Balls Effectively

After using wool dryer balls in my laundry routine for years, I learned several helpful tips I want to share with you.

SMALL LOAD

To dry a small load, place 2 wool dryer balls (these are the ones I use) in with the load of laundry.

MEDIUM LOAD

I recommend adding 3 to 4 wool dryer balls to medium-size laundry loads.

LARGE LOAD

For large loads of laundry, use 4 to 5 wool dryer balls to effectively speed up drying time.

If you loved the fragrant scent dryer sheets gave your laundry, use one of these two eco-friendly tricks.

  1. Spritz a natural linen spray, like this recipe for a fresh linen spray, on the wool balls or right into the dryer before starting.
  2. Simply add 2 to 3 drops of essential oils for cleaning straight out of the bottle onto the wool balls.
  • After drying, you can toss the wool dryer balls in a cotton laundry basket to absorb more of the scent and further add fragrance to your laundry.
  • When the laundry is finished for the week, I like to keep my dryer balls inside a laundry storage tin. This laundry set comes with a cute DRYER BALLS label!
  • Or you can simply store them inside the dryer until the next use.

  1. I had never heard of wool dryer balls before. I am particularly interested in them for my mother-in-law who suffers from allergies and COPD. Thanks for sharing this interesting idea!

Lisa, I actually just learned about them last year and have been using them ever since. I think they would make a great gift with bottle of lavender essential oil or linen spray for your mother-in-law.

  2. I love them and have been using them for about 3 years. My favorite for scent for the dryer balls is orange!!

    1. lifenreflection says:

Aren’t they such a time saver! I haven’t tried orange yet… Thanks Barbara

  3. I just got my dryer balls and love them….but I notice sometimes I have a lot of static. Has this happened to you and is there anything I can do about it? If not, it’s no biggie I will continue using them anyway, I think they’re great!

Tracy, I haven’t had a issue with static. But, I know a few others who have and they recommend adding a safety pin to one the wool dryer balls. It should cut the static out!

  4. I started using these a few weeks ago by accident. I thought I ordered something else. These are fantastic though – cut down drying time, clothes are super soft, no static cling and the lint screen is not as full: which means fibers stay on the clothes where they belong! I added some “Black Amber & Oak” essential oil to them and am loving that scent. Not flowery at all, good for the entire family’s clothes!
