Top 5 Natural Beauty Brands and Why Your Makeup May Need a Makeover
It may surprise you, but makeup was one of the last things I changed to natural. I learned all the ins and outs of carrier oils, body butter, essential oils, and hydrosols for my skin type. I created my own skincare regimen and tossed out all the expensive creams and medications for my cystic acne and eczema.
But, still, I clung to my toxic makeup. I knew I wasn’t ready to DIY makeup, I may never be ready. And I had tried a few natural minerals makeup lines in the past. They didn’t give me the coverage or results I wanted, like longer looking lashes. So, I was reluctant to change.

The Toxic Makeup Monster

According to the Environmental Working group, as many as one in five cosmetic products sold in the US contains an ingredient that releases formaldehyde as it breaks down. You may know it as embalming fluid, which is a known human carcinogen.
And there are other carcinogens in drugstore beauty brands such as cadmium and hexavalent chromium. These are sometimes used as colorants in eye shadow and lip gloss, according to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
If that’s not enough to sway you towards natural makeup too, then consider all the widely-used parabens. Preservatives that have shown possible links to breast cancer in addition to being hormone disruptors.
