3 Ways To Test Candle Scent Recipes
Here are tried and true ways to test these citrus-infused candle scent recipes at home, in addition to your own ideas for scented candles.
Quick Jar Test:
For a quick test of a scent recipe, add drops of each scent according to the percentage on a cotton ball.
For example, if you want to smell the Sugared Citrus scent I share below before making a candle, do this: Add five drops of orange, 3 drops of tangerine, and 2 drops of vanilla to a cotton ball. Place the scented cotton ball in a glass jar.
After a few days, open the jar and take a whiff. If you like what you smell, make a candle or test it in the next step.
Small Candle Test:
Another affordable way to test a candle scent blend is to make a small candle. This can and will give the best example of how it will perform in a candle. Opt to make a small two or four-ounce candle. Make sure you give it 3 to 7 days to cure before lighting and smelling the hot throw.

Candle Supplies You’ll Need:
Recommend Candle Tools:
Steps To Make Citrus Candles:
1. Press a cotton wick into a wick tab. Then place it in the center base of one 8-ounce ceramic ramekin. Repeat for the second candle.
Crafter’s Note: When choosing ceramic ramekins for candle making, always make sure they are heavy-duty, glazed, and labeled as oven-safe. This ensures the ceramic can comfortably handle the heat of a flickering wick, keeping things perfectly safe from start to finish!
2. Use a kitchen scale to measure 1 lb of soy wax and add it to a candle-melting pitcher. Place the wax-filled pitcher inside a saucepan that is filled with about 2 inches of water. Using the double boiler method, heat on low heat with a gentle simmer at most. Stir slowly, yet often, and do not heat the wax above 160°F.
3. Remove the pitcher from the heat immediately after melting. Check the temperature of the wax with a quick infrared thermometer. You’ll want to wax to cool to 150°F before adding 0.70 ounces of lemon essential oil, 1/4 ounce of grapefruit essential oil, and 1/8 ounce of basil essential oil. Slowly stir the fragrance into the wax for a consistent two minutes.
4. After incorporating the fragrance into the candle wax, monitor it until it cools to 115°F (if you’re using a different wax, refer to the manufacturer’s temperature recommendation). Warm the glass jars before pouring the wax with a heat gun for the perfect adhesion.
5. Slip a wooden candle-centering device over the wicks to keep them in place while curing. Remove after 24 hours and trim the candle wicks to ¼” with a wick trimmer. Wait three to seven days before lighting the candle for a strong scent.
