Is bathing in wine good for you?

Wine does contain potent antioxidants helpful in reducing inflammation and fighting free radicals that increase the signs of aging, for example. But, bathing in wine doesn’t truly allow enough absorption of the antioxidants as drinking it does. And as we know, alcohol can dry the skin.

This is why bath salts made with wine are better.

Soaking in red wine may not be the best use of your favorite elixir, but when you pair a bottle of merlot with sea salt, you’re on to something with wine bath salts!

How can you make bath salts with wine?

What is wine salt?

Wine salt is a pairing of aged merlot and sea salt. The deep red color of wine salt is visually stunning and unique among salts, and many find it the perfect balance between a rich sweet wine and a salty, savory flavor.

Merlot salt is more commonly known for its slightly tart, briny, oaky finish for sauces and stocks. And it is also used as an elegant garnish for popular charcuterie boards.

When used in a hot bath, your skin can absorb a small amount of antioxidants and nutrients from the wine and a large amount of minerals from the salt.

Did you know you can make merlot sea salt? It’s the perfect DIY if you have leftover bottles of open wine after an event, wedding, or dinner party.  Here’s a recipe for DIY merlot salt that looks easy enough.

I purchased mine from a wine bar while on a date with my husband. I’ve since found merlot salt at Whole Foods. You can have it delivered to your door for free with Amazon Prime! You’ll need two ounces for this wine bath salts recipe. So order two one-ounce bottles or a big sixteen-ounce bag to use for cooking too.

How can you make bath salts with wine?

I’ll be the first to admit; merlot salt is not cheap! So, I make it go further by blending it into more affordable pink Himalayan salt. Then I add a blend of angelica and bergamot essential oils, similar to the aroma of red wine.

Last, I include pink globe amaranth flowers and vibrant pomegranate flowers to add to the bathing experience. Combined, each ingredient gives way to an incredible wine bath salts recipe.

And when you pair it with a bar of my homemade pomegranate pink clay soap, candlelight, and a glass of merlot while you soak – you might just be in heaven.
