Bringing the Outdoors In With A Sunny Simmering Stove Top Potpourri
A citrus summer stove top potpourri recipe to banish odors, refresh your home, and embrace the beauty of the season.
If there’s one thing I’m always chasing, it’s the feeling of living in rhythm with the seasons. From the herbs in my garden to the art on my gallery wall, I love bringing the season indoors. Scent is one of the simplest, most satisfying ways to do just that!
While I adore making candles, sometimes I want a scent that spreads instantly throughout our home. That’s where a good ol’ simmer pot shines.
What is a Simmering Potpourri?
Simmering potpourri (or stovetop potpourri, if you prefer) is a simple blend of fresh or dried ingredients simmered gently in water. Think of it as an old-school eco air freshener—no flame, no plug-ins, no synthetic anything. It’s an excellent way to replace typical air fresheners!
In the cooler months of the year, I crave spicy aromas like cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. (If it’s chilly where you are, grab my cozy Winter Spice Simmer Pot recipe!) When summer arrives, I crave something bright, crisp, and clean—citrus all the way!
Yes, it’s citrus that leads the way in this sunny summer version! Featuring fruits synonymous with summer, fresh-picked herbs, and a hint of vanilla—it smells like summer in a bottle (or pot in this case).
So, clear the air and usher in the season with a gorgeous natural aroma anyone can create!
Whether you’re prepping for guests, cleaning, or just setting the mood for a blissful afternoon, this DIY potpourri will leave your home feeling refreshed and full of life.

Why boil a stove top potpourri?
Well, if you’re looking for a completely natural alternative to standard store-bought room sprays, a simmer pot is the perfect solution! This simple simmering potpourri recipe fills your home with beautiful, crisp summer scents without the need for artificial aerosols or heavy synthetic fragrances.
And unlike conventional fragrances that mimic the real deal, this true botanical aroma will gently linger throughout the day even after you’ve stopped simmering.
Can you really boil potpourri? Absolutely! It’s a lot like making mulled cider—just with a fresher, more botanical twist. As it simmers, you’ll want to keep an eye on the water level and add about a half cup every 30 minutes or so to keep things from drying out.
But don’t worry—it’s truly simple. I love to simmer potpourri while decorating for the season and welcoming guests. Since I’m already spending time in the kitchen during these activities, it’s easy to give it an occasional stir or top-off.
