Hygge (pronounced hue-ga, as in hue like a shade of color, not high-gee) is buzzing around this time of year, even if some of us can’t seem to get the pronunciation correct. There isn’t a direct English translation for hygge. Best explained it’s the Danish term for the quality of coziness and comfort often explained by the Dane’s lifestyle.
What is a hygge lifestyle? It’s the Danish concept of cultivating a comforting coziness through the enjoyment of the simple things in life. And in doing so, invoke feelings of joy, happiness, friendliness, and contentment.
In contrast, our American lifestyle is quite the opposite. We are often driven to hustle, conquer our goals, beat all the odds, and move from one big thing to the next. Rarely is there any mention of slowing down and enjoying the simple things.
I can certainly appreciate their mindset and love that the Danes believe the feeling of cozy leads to a happy life. If you’re after the hygge feelings of warmth, connection, and togetherness, too, you’ll love these swoon-worthy hygge candle ideas for a hygge home!

How do I make my house feel hygge?
Candles, yes, all you need are candles to make your house feel hygge. You see, candles are the easiest way to add instant hygge to your life. In ‘The Little Book of Hygge,’ Meik Wiking writes that “no recipe for hygge is complete without candles.”
In fact, 85% of Danish people associate candles with hygge. So, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that Denmark is the leading consumer of candles in Europe.
It may seem evident that candles equate to coziness, but most Danes will tell you that you cannot hygge without candlelight. The atmosphere a candle creates by adding light with a gentle glow is one the most important pieces of a hygge home.
This means if you want to ignite this Danish lifestyle, you’re going to need hygge candles!

What is a Hygge candle?
A hygge candle brightens the far too-early winter sunsets and brings cheer to your home with a warm glow that feels like a big hug.
If you’re wondering what candles the Danish use, you won’t find a specific candle. Some, like unscented candles, simple beeswax tapers, or scented candles that can single-handedly make your house smell cozy.
Because scent is an intersection between memories and emotions, this is precisely why a scented candle can pack quite a punch.
What scent is Hygge?
If hygge is about coziness and comfort, it has to be a scent that makes you feel that way.
Take this candle scent recipe included in my fall candle scent printable; for example, it’s a candle scent many enjoy year-round in their kitchen. It is a delightful aroma of freshly baked apples and warm sugar, highlighted by comforting spices, cinnamon, and clove.
