Candle making is a passion that’s truly lit up my life for nearly a decade. In that time, I’ve made dozens and dozens of candles, from sparkly floating candles to the warm, crackling ambiance of wood wick candles. But if one candle-making style keeps pulling me back in, it’s working with beeswax.

The sweet scent of honey and those intricate honeycomb patterns on the beeswax sheets are undeniably charming. Don’t you think? This candle project to create votive beeswax sheet candles is nothing but charming. 

Votive candles are the perfect size for so many decorating ideas. They’re not too big, not too small – just right. 

A handful of small votives can create a cozy atmosphere in any space. Scatter them across your dining room sideboard, around the bathtub, or tuck them into charming displays for the holidays. No matter how you go about it, you’ll be adding the unique charm of beeswax to your home.

How Do You Make Beeswax Candles With Beeswax Sheets?

Crafting your very own beeswax votive candles is surprisingly easy. If you happen to have youngsters in your life, this project is a fantastic way to bond with them. 

Kids love the hands-on experience of rolling the beeswax sheets and creating something beautiful (my daughter certainly does). It’s a wonderful way to teach our youth about the joys of crafting and the satisfaction of gifting something they’ve made with love.

These simple votive candles create thoughtful, handmade gifts that can be shared any time of the year. And they’re not only simple to make but quite frugal. 

To get started, all you need is beeswax sheets and a cotton wick spool!

You’ll find that beeswax sheets come in a variety of colors. Classic golden beeswax is my favorite, but with the holidays ahead, I decided to make white beeswax votive candles to use in my snowy vignettes. They fit perfectly in displays on our fireplace mantel and make quite the candle centerpiece.

How Many Votives Can You Make From One Sheet Of Beeswax?

How many votives you can make from one sheet of beeswax depends on the size of the sheets you buy. I purchase pure beeswax sheets in full size. Each is 8″ x 16 1/4″ inches. 

Standard votive candles are 2 inches in height and vary in diameter from 1.5” – 1.75″ inches. So, you can make 4 votive candles from one sheet of beeswax when you slice the sheet into four 2” x 16.5” strips. 

If you use the beeswax candle making kit I used, with 10 full-size sheets, you can make 40 votive candles! Yes, you read that right, FORTY. 

Or you can use three from the kit to make a dozen votives and use the remaining sheets to make beeswax rolled tapers and pillar candles.

Now, you can clearly see how affordable beeswax sheet candles are to make! And, best of all, how easy it is to create different colors and candle types with beeswax sheets. All of which makes it simple to create unique homemade candle gifts!

What Kind Of Wick Do You Use For Beeswax Candles?

For beeswax candles, it’s best to use square braided cotton wicks that are thicker than typical cotton wicks used for container candles.

Why do beeswax candles need thicker wicks? Beeswax candles need thicker wicks because they have a higher melting point and require more heat for an even burn.

Thankfully, a candle making kit comes with the wick! 

How Do You Make Beeswax More Flexible?

You may have heard it’s easier to work beeswax when it’s flexible. How do you soften beeswax sheets for candles? I learned how to soften beeswax sheets when I made beeswax tapers the second time around. 

I must admit the sheets were more pliable and easier to shape when softened. By softening the beeswax, you can avoid cracking or tearing the beeswax sheets. 

What softens beeswax? One way to soften beeswax is to lay the sheets in individual layers on a surface near a sunny window. 

However, the easiest option is to use a heat gun designed for candle-making to soften the sheets quickly!

How To Create Votive Beeswax Sheet Candles In Minutes

Now it’s your turn to create votive candles with beeswax sheets. Read through the steps, print them out if you like from the button below, then gather your supplies. 

Let’s get those creative candles rolling (pun intended)! 

Here’s All That You’ll Need:

White Beeswax Sheet Candle Kit

Clear Ruler

Scissors

Pizza Cutter Wheel

Heat Gun (optional, but recommended) 

Votive Beeswax Candle Instructions

Cut The Beeswax Sheets

Before you begin, you may want to cover your surface with wax or parchment paper to keep the beeswax from sticking to the surface. 

Lay one sheet on a safe cutting surface and place a clear ruler on top. Slice the sheet into four 2” x 16.5” strips with a pizza cutter wheel. I love that this pizza cutter wheel is dishwasher-safe!

You can use a pair of scissors to cut the sheets, but I’ve found a pizza cutter wheel easily glides through all tacky beeswax.

Note: each strip will make one votive candle. Repeat this step to create more candles. 

Cut The Candle Wicks

Using the ruler and a pair of scissors, cut candle wicks from the spool in 2.5-inch lengths for each votive.

Warm The Beeswax Sheets

As I shared above, it’s best to warm up the wax sheets a little. Warming helps to avoid cracking or tearing the beeswax sheets. Simply wave a heat gun back and forth across the length of each strip of beeswax until it’s warm. 

Secure The Candle Wick

With your beeswax warmed, place one precut wick at the edge of the short side of each sheet. Press the wick into the beeswax sheet, lining up with the edge while leaving half an inch of the wick extended from the top of the strip (see the photos). 

Then, tightly fold the edge of the beeswax sheet over the wick to secure it in place. If the sheet feels too stiff to roll, warm it up more.

Roll The Beeswax

After securing each wick, slowly roll each strip up as tightly and evenly as possible. Keep rolling the candle until you reach the end. Then, gently press the seam into the candle seal. Warm the wax’s edge before finishing the roll with a heat gun for a smoother seal. 

PRINT THE CANDLE RECIPE

Light these homemade votive beeswax candles as you would any candle, trimming the wick to ¼ inch each time and never leaving it unattended.
