How To Make Shower Steamers Energizing

Here’s how to make shower steamers at home with the best shower steamer recipe for an energizing wake-up call! And tips on how to use a shower steamer to make it last longer.

Do you have a difficult time waking up in the morning? Or do you feel sluggish getting ready each day? I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a morning person.

I’ve never understood how other moms can get up at 5 am to do “all the things” before their kids wake. I must lack an early riser chromosome or something.

All I want to do after I put my daughter on the school bus is to go back to bed! But that’s rarely an option, right? So, this school year, I’ve been doing what I can to make mornings easier.

I do a backpack check, snack, school lunch prep, breakfast laid out (we bake mini muffins 1x a week), and clothes picked for the next day, all within the first minutes after school. These steps right here are huge!

But, when it comes to dragging every morning, I use essential oils and herbs to help me feel energized. Once I’ve waved goodbye to the school bus, fed our Vizsla, and cleaned up the random family clutter, I place an energizing shower steamer, also called shower bombs, in the shower to start my day. I run through my to-do list for the day and plan my next steps while breathing in an exhilarating aromatherapy blend.

If the words early riser, don’t describe you either, I know you’ll appreciate the wake-up call of an energizing shower steamer!

Like a candle, the slower a shower steamer melts, the better the fragrance. Breathe deeply in the magnitude of lemon, rosemary, and peppermint to activate your day with these DIY, energizing shower steamers!

How To Use Shower Steamers

A hot shower infused with a blend of bright, happy lemon, fresh rosemary, and peppy peppermint from a DIY shower steamer is all I need to perk up in the morning. This incredible combination truly wakes up my senses and helps me get ready for the day without dragging my feet. (Not to mention, it makes our master bath smell so fresh and clean.)

If you can’t seem to get yourself awake in the morning, follow these steps on how to use shower steamers for a lasting effect.

1. Close all the doors and windows in your bathroom. And turn off any fans for an excellent aromatherapy experience.

2. Where should a steamer be placed in a shower? Put a shower steamer on the edge of the shower floor, ledge, or built-in nook.  A placement that is just out of the water’s reach is ideal. (Shower steamers should never be submerged nor placed under a direct spray of water.)

3. Turn on the shower and step in! When droplets of water or steam reach the shower steamer, it will begin to melt and release an energetic aroma into the steam.

To make a shower steamer last longer, aim for droplets of water bouncing off the walls, floor, and you, for that matter, to hit the shower steamer. It’s even better if the shower’s steam alone melts the disc. Because, like a candle, the slower the burn, the better the fragrance.

So, breathe deeply in the magnitude of lemon, rosemary, and peppermint to activate your day!

The best part about shower steamers is they are just as simple to make as they are to use. Here’s how to make shower steamers at home with the best shower steamer recipe for an energizing wake-up call!

How do you make your own shower steamers?

The best part about shower steamers is they are just as simple to make as they are to use! I’ve also made large disc shower steamers and shower tablets for sinus relief. Along the way, I’ve tested a few methods for making shower steamers. So, here are a few notes to help you out.

If you’re wondering, do you need citric acid for shower steamers? in my experience, you do. Without citric acid, you’ll miss the fizzing part of shower steamers.

As for clay or cream of tartar, they can be left out. However, you’re homemade shower steamers won’t be as strong and hard as store-bought steamers without it.

And to get the right consistency and bind all the ingredients together, you’ll need a splash of water or witch hazel. I fill a bottle with witch hazel and use it to evenly spritz shower steamer and bath bomb mixtures. It doesn’t fizz as much as water, so you’re DIYs can keep their fizziness.

Also, the dried peppermint and lemon peel won’t clog your drain; they are tiny and will wash down with everything else. If they bother you, just leave them out of the recipe.

Last, if you want to use more essential oils, you can. Since shower steamers aren’t designed for skincare, and you won’t be rubbing them against your skin, add as much as you like for a stronger scent.

1 ½ inch mini muffin silicone mold

½ cup baking soda

¼ cup citric acid

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 teaspoon dried lemon peel

½ teaspoon dried peppermint leaves

10 drops lemon essential oil

5 drops peppermint essential oil

5 drops rosemary essential oil

How To Make Shower Steamers:

  1. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of dried lemon peel and ½ teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves evenly across 12 sections of a 1 ½ inch mini muffin size silicone mold
  2. Then sift ½ cup of baking soda, ¼ cup of citric acid, and 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar into a large glass or metal mixing bowl. (Sifting with a hand-held sifter or fine mesh strainer makes smooth shower steamers.) Wisk these dry ingredients together.

  5. Scoop the shower steamer mixture on top of the herbs in the silicone mold. Press the mixture into the mold using the bottom of a small spice jar. Repeat until you’ve filled twelve sections.

Allow the shower steamers to dry uncovered in the silicone mold for 8 hours or overnight. After drying, place a cookie sheet or wood cutting board on top of the shower steamers in the mold. Turn it upside down, and then as needed, gently press each shower steamer out of the mold.
