What To Make With A Wood Slice
I love to style a candle on a stack of raw wood slices but, I completely overlooked their use as air fresheners. The natural porous fibers in wood can absorb fragrance and diffuse it into the air over time.
When conditioned with an oil, such as olive oil the scent lasts even longer!
What is the best wood for a diffuser?
You can create a diffuser from any type of wood. However, I’ve found soft woods such as pine or cedar to be the best absorbers. If you’ve ever painted fresh pine, you know it’s thirsty wood. Ha, Ha
These pre-drilled wood slices made from pine worked perfectly for this project. Each maintained is raw wood edge for a rustic appeal, yet the surface is smooth and flat, unlike other wood slices I’ve worked with.
That’s because they were sanded and air-dried flat to ensure a smooth, flat surface for stamping, painting, writing, or drawing.
Therefore you can decorate each wood slice and enjoy the scent of fresh pine with a few tips I share below.
Ways To Use A Wood Slice
Wood slices can be decorated in so many ways to make Christmas ornaments, but it doesn’t stop there.
For those of us who reuse a “fake” Christmas tree each year, adding pine, spruce, or cedarwood essential oil to the recipe below will give it a real tree scent. Think fresh cut from a Christmas tree farm!

Wood Slice DIY Craft Instructions
Cover your surface or use a cutting board, as I do in the video before you begin.
Step 1: Gently brush away loose debris or dust from each wood slice.
Step 2: Create a forestscape with clear stamps on a clear stamping block. Stamp the scene with forest green ink onto the surface of each wood slice.
Then use a brown stamping pen to draw tree trunks onto each tree in the forestscape on the wood slices.
Step 3: Next, stamp 12 cotton muslin bags with the forest scene to create matching sachets. (I slipped a piece of small cardstock into each bag before stamping to stop the ink from bleeding through the fabric.)
Step 4: Lay the bags out to dry, then in a small bowl combine 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 15 ml of natural crisp juniper fir fragrance or blend of 10 ml pine and 5 ml of juniper essential oils. Stir the mixture with a popsicle stick.
Step 5: Then use a small foam brush to thoroughly paint the oil mixture onto each side of the wood slice. Allow them to dry for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for the mixture to soak into the wood.
Step 6: Once dry, cut natural twine from the spool and thread through the pre-drilled holes. Tie a knot in the twine for hanging.
To Use:
Hang as is to use or slip inside a stamped muslin bag to protect from stains. When you notice the scent begins to dissipate, simply add a drop of pine essential oil to the unstamped side to refresh!
