What can I do with lots of lemons?

If you’re looking for practical ideas on what to do with extra lemons, you’ve come to the right place.

I always find myself bringing home a bag of lemons from the market for household solutions and craft ideas. Because lemons are simply amazing. The same bright, fresh flavor and distinctive yellow color used in cooking can be applied to dozens of DIY home projects.

In turn, I’ve learned a few simple tricks to make lemons last longer. Here are a few easy ways to stretch the use of lemons.

Tips to Make Lemons Last Longer:

  • CHOOSE HEAVY LEMONS: For recipes and DIYs that call for juice, choose lemons that feel heavy for their size. These are the juiciest!
  • STORE IN THE FRIDGE: Store lemons loosely wrapped or in a closed container in the refrigerator crisp drawer to keep them from drying out.
  • ZEST FIRST: If a recipe only calls for juice, don’t waste the peel! Zest the lemon with an easy lemon zester and store it in the freezer or fridge in an airtight container.
  • WARM BEFORE SQUEEZING: Bring cold lemons to room temperature first. Firmly roll them against a cutting board with your palm to burst the juice capsules. Then use a handheld squeezer so you’ll never miss a single drop.
  • SAVE THE JUICE: If you only need zest, juice the remaining fruit and freeze it in an ice cube tray for future recipes.
  • USE A LEMON KEEPER: If you only use half a lemon, store the cut half in a lemon saver. It keeps leftover citrus firm and fresh without extra plastic wrap.
  • FREEZE LEFTOVER PEELS: Lemon peels are worth their weight in gold! Peel them off with a lemon peeler to dehydrate later for home projects, or store them in a sealed bag in the freezer.
